Working together to make Chattanooga-Hamilton County the best place in the nation for a child to be born and raised.

About Us

Early Matters Chattanooga is a coalition made up of over 40 diverse organizations invested in early childhood, positively impacting the systems that ensure happy and healthy childhoods in Hamilton County, TN.

OUR MISSION: Working together to promote equitable access to early childhood programs and services through systems building and advocacy efforts.

THE IMPACT: Equitable access to early childhood programs and services is a key factor that leads to thriving families, thriving programs and a thriving community — making Chattanooga the best city in the nation for a child to be born and raised. Advancing equity in early learning means undoing the conditions that have historically prevented many children from reaching their full potential based on race, income, and other social factors.

Our Work:

The following are three key initiatives our members have been a part of, with many more in the pipeline:

  • Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)– Our workgroup has supported and trained a cross-sector of community stakeholders on the impact toxic stress has on children through adulthood, trauma-informed care, and methods for strengthening families. To request an ACEs presentation for your group or organization, please email earlymatterschatt@gmail.com
  • Chattanooga Basics– Adopted and launched locally by our coalition, the Basics are five fun, simple, and powerful ways that every family can give every child a great start in life. Learn more at chattanoogabasics.org
  • Hospital Visitation Program– Created and overseen by our coalition members, this purpose of this program was to ensure that every family who has a baby in our local hospitals is greeted by a hospital volunteer with the knowledge of developmentally appropriate resources to them. These resources include enrollment in the Imagination Library monthly book program, a texting program that sends developmentally appropriate messages based on the birth date of the child, and information on the Chattanooga Basics.
